China’s gaming industry has made significant progress in recent years. However, a recent event has sparked negative perceptions of “made in China” brands, especially involving a major player in the industry.
Specifically, Tencent has launched a new open-world survival game called Light of Motiram, developed by Polaris Quest. Featuring a post-apocalyptic world and massive mechanical creatures, the game’s visuals and setting bear striking similarities to Sony PlayStation’s Horizon series. Notably, for those unfamiliar with Light of Motiram, the initial trailer and promotional images might even lead some to mistakenly believe it’s the third installment in the Horizon franchise.
Despite the shared thematic elements, Light of Motiram seems to deliver a completely different gameplay experience. Combining survival mechanics with building, combat, and creature-taming elements, the game promises an expansive and challenging open world. It blends styles reminiscent of ARK: Survival Evolved, Monster Hunter, and Palworld.
Currently, Light of Motiram is at the center of heated debates within the gaming community. Many have pointed out significant similarities in visuals and concepts between this title and pre-existing games, particularly the Horizon series. This has sparked comparisons and discussions about the originality of Tencent’s latest offering.
