Sony had an incredibly successful year in 2024, with its exclusive title Astro Bot being honored with the Game of the Year (GOTY) award at The Game Awards. In 2025, the PlayStation giant promises to rake in billions more in revenue, especially when looking at the exciting lineup of games set to launch on the PS5 this year.
With the PlayStation 5 still holding its position as the most powerful console on the market, it’s no surprise that 2025 will see the release of several promising AAA titles. These include not only Sony’s exclusive offerings but also long-anticipated third-party titles.
Ghost of Yotei
Ghost of Yotei is an action-adventure game developed by Sucker Punch and published exclusively on PS5 by Sony. This title serves as a standalone sequel, not directly connected to the storyline of Ghost of Tsushima (2020). The game is set in Hokkaido, Japan, during the 1630s. Players will follow Atsu, a female warrior who assumes the role of “The Ghost” to seek vengeance.
Through the trailer, we learn key details about Atsu, most notably her ability to dual-wield swords—something Jin Sakai from the original game could not do. The game will continue to emphasize its signature hack-and-slash combat system while introducing diverse combat mechanics.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is an action-adventure game developed by Kojima Productions and published exclusively on PS5 by Sony. As the sequel to Death Stranding (2019), the legendary Hideo Kojima returns as the director. The story once again revolves around Sam Porter Bridges (played by Norman Reedus), Fragile (played by Léa Seydoux), and Higgs (played by Troy Baker) as they navigate the challenges of expanding the Chiral Network.
The sequel promises significant upgrades in graphics, animations, and environmental quality, as seen in the revealed trailers. The game will also introduce groundbreaking realism, with terrain dynamically changing in real-time due to floods, earthquakes, or wildfires. Structures will also degrade or be destroyed based on these environmental changes.
Marathon
Marathon is a tactical first-person shooter developed by Bungie, the studio behind iconic franchises like Halo and Destiny. In 2022, Sony acquired Bungie to strengthen its PlayStation lineup.
Originally launched in 1994 with three installments concluding in 1996, Marathon is now being rebooted by Bungie and Sony. The 2025 version promises cutting-edge graphics and refined gameplay while paying homage to the series’ roots.
FairgameS
FairgameS is a competitive shooter developed by Haven Studios and published by Sony for PS5 and PC. In this game, players take on the role of a member of a heist crew targeting billionaires and massive corporations while competing against rival groups with similar goals.
After the commercial failure of Concord, FairgameS represents Sony’s renewed effort to break into the competitive shooter genre. The trailer showcases impressive visuals and high realism. According to creative director Mathieu Leduc, FairgameS will feature an “emergent sandbox” experience, offering players dynamic and ever-changing environments that encourage creative problem-solving.
Grand Theft Auto 6
Grand Theft Auto 6 is an action-adventure game developed by Rockstar Games. As the eighth main entry and the 16th installment in the GTA series, the game is set in Leonida, a fictional state inspired by Florida. The story follows Lucia, a female criminal, and her crew as they navigate their way through the criminal underworld.
Despite generating immense anticipation, GTA 6 has sparked controversy due to Rockstar’s vague release timeline. This uncertainty has caused many other AAA studios to avoid overlapping their launch windows with this juggernaut title.
Although GTA 6 won’t be a PlayStation 5 exclusive, ongoing issues with Xbox Series X/S have led many to speculate that the game’s release on Microsoft’s console may face delays compared to Sony’s PS5.
These five titles represent some of the most exciting upcoming releases for the PS5 in 2025. From gripping narratives to groundbreaking gameplay innovations, this year promises to be another golden chapter for PlayStation fans.
